Green Day Android

As the weather gets colder heading into the dark depths of autumn and winter, you may be thinking that all you want to do is curl up on the sofa with a good book. You would however miss out on a multitude of days out for all the family that the National Trust has to offer. The National Trust look after historic houses, monuments and gardens, as well as beaches, castles, woods and nature reserves, so you'll never run out of things to do, even in the middle of winter.

Autumn Colour with the National Trust

  • Ashridge Estate in Hertfordshire is located only 27 miles from the heart of London, but it couldn't be more different. Footpaths and trails snake through peaceful woodland, and it's at its best in autumn when the wood is a mass of red, gold and orange. There's also Ashridge Park to explore, an historic parkland that was originally the estate's deer park.
  • Meander along the wood and riverside walks of Gibside Landscape Park in Gateshead and you can gaze across the Derwent Valley. You may even be lucky enough to spot a red kite flying overhead. Make sure you walk through the avenue of oak trees, which go from the Palladian Chapel to the Column of Liberty, to enjoy their firey autumn colour. Warm up over coffee and cake in the Potting Shed Tea Room, and buy local produce from Gibside Larder.
  • 'Capability' Brown designed the 120 acres of the beautiful 18th century landscaped Sheffield Park Garden in East Sussex. Five interlinked lakes are surrounded by birch and cypress trees as well as the stunning Japanese maples, which turn scarlet in autumn. It's the perfect place for winter walks as the parkland is open all year.
  • Located on the edge of the Lake District, Sizergh Castle in Cumbria has beautiful gardens to explore. Japanese maples and acers fill the garden with vivid autumnal colour, along with dwarf conifers in varying shades of green and gold. Enjoy breathtaking views over Lakeland Fells and Morecombe Bay from the 1,600 acre estate.
  • Stourhead in Wiltshire is the famous 18th century landscaped garden that really comes to life in autumn. With its temples and grottos hidden amongst the trees that overlook the central lake, it makes for a great day out. As you follow the paths through Stourhead admire the autumnal colour of the Japanese acers, redwoods, cypress and chestnuts that all add to the myriad of reds and golds reflected in the lake.

Winter Gardens and Walks

  • Dinefwr Park and Castle in Carmarthenshire is a park with a history reaching back some 2,000 years. There are signposted walks through the park and magnificent views from the top of the castle. Rare White Park cattle can be spotted in the medieval park.
  • If you want to see the largest winter garden in the UK then head to Dunham Massey in Cheshire. Explore all 7 acres and enjoy the scent and colour of over 1,600 shrubs and 700 different species of plants, even in the depths of winter. The restaurant is open all year too.
  • Discover over 40 temples and monuments set within the wooded valleys and around ornamental lakes in Stowe Landscape Garden in Buckinghamshire.

The National Trust website have downloadable walks that are searchable by area of the country or by theme. The leaflet contains directions, map and details of what to see and do during the walk. They even suggest good walks to do throughout the year. The suggestion for November is a 2 mile walk through the idyllic parkland of Castle Ward Estate in Northern Ireland and along the shores of Strangford Lough. The perfect choice for December is a bracing 4 mile walk through the Victorian Craflwyn Estate, which lies in the shadow of Mt. Snowdon. In January head to Stourhead and do the 3 mile walk from the lake up to Park Hill Camp Iron Age hill fort.

Rainy Days Out with the National Trust

There's a very high chance in the UK of rain throughout autumn and winter. Leave the walks and winter gardens for those cold and crisp or even snowy days and try out these suggestions on rainy days.
