I’ve never heard anyone say “black rapper” before. Should one call him or herself a rap star then that person is automatically assumed to be black. But when our expectations are broken when a pale faced, hoodie clad amateur takes the stage, there’s a silent scoff because he’s a white rapper. So, does the white, black-sheep rapper have a place in the world of hip hop?

Black and White Content

KRS-One once said in an interview that real raps can’t be created by those with lots of money. The strain of street life instigated by lives of poverty and crime gives hip hop the genuine quality that can not be replicated by other musical forms. This burden inspired performers like the Notorious B.I.G., Immortal Technique, and Tupac Shakur. It was Tupac who first linked the issue of the lower class to race with his song “Changes”:
