When does 13 come after 20? Only when you're Fox Home Video: the studio rushed The Simpsons 20th Season onto Blu-Ray last winter to commemorate the show surpassing Gunsmoke as America's longest-running TV series. While that Blu-Ray was distressingly lacking, The Gracie Films gang make up for it with the jam-packed The Simpsons: The Thirteenth Season DVD.

This show doesn't need any introduction to animation fans – although those wanting more information about the show can check out Suite 101's exclusive interview with animator/director/tuba-torcher David Silverman (/blatant plug).

Most Simpsons aficionados claim the show went into decline after the 9th season; that said, Season 13 was an improvement over the relatively lackluster 11 and 12 offerings. There are some comedy gems, such as Lisa's conversion to Buddhism ("She of Little Faith"), Paul Newman speaking from a bottle of salad dressing ("The Blunder Years") and Stan Lee invading the Android Dungeon ("I am Furious (Yellow)"). There are also some lesser offerings, such as "Homer the Moe" (a recycled plot about Moe's Tavern), the weak premise of "The Lastest Gun in the West" and "Gump Roast," a clip show with a senseless framing device.

The 12th "Treehouse of Horror" episode* is also a disappointment, featuring Bart and Lisa in a Harry Potter setting, Homer cursed by a gypsy and Pierce Brosnan playing an amorous computer (the best of the 3).

Overall, the good outweighs the bad. The Simpsons may have slipped a bit but there are still plenty of laughs per episode. Even the worst ones feature some classic moments, such as when Homer gives Bart a poster of himself posing as Farrah Fawcett in "The Lastest Gun in the West."
