Mami Wata, or "mother of water" are a convergence of traditional African water deities and influences from European and Hindu cultures. Mami Wata can take several forms (and can be referred to in the singular or plural), with a common feature being a half bare-chested female, half serpent form. Depicted as sexy, mysterious figures, Mami Wata are extremely powerful and bring wealth to those who show devotion. Mami Wata have inspired many followers throughout the African diaspora and have recently served as the focus for a traveling art exhibit.
