Smartphones continue to be the fastest growing segment of the mobile phone market with worldwide sales reaching 61.4 million during the second quarter of 2010, up from 54.3 million in the first quarter. Leading the increase are smartphones using the Google Android OS, with sales doubling from 5.2 million to 10.6 million and overtaking sales of the Apple iPhone.

Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Rise in 2010

On August 12, 2010, the world's leading information technology research and advisory company, Gartner Inc, released its Competitive Landscape: Mobile Devices, Worldwide, 2Q10 report, which reflected a clear increase in mobile phone sales during 2010.

Worldwide sales of all mobile phones in the second quarter of 2010 reached 325.6 million, representing a 13.8% increase over the same period in 2009, and an increase of almost 11 million over first quarter sales, according to Gartner's 1Q10 report. Nokia was again the leading manufacturer with a 34.2% market share, which was down slightly from their 35% share in the first quarter, though they still achieved sales growth. Samsung remained in second position with a small slide of a 20.6% to 20.1% market share, but they too achieved sales growth.
